SUN, DEC 08 2019-theG&BJournal- He came to win, no time for show-boating, just plain boxing and it delivered for Anthony Joshua a two-time champion tag.
Boxing enthusiast around the world hails Joshua’s performance as masterful in a night that he stuck to his back-foot game plan to claim a clear 118-110 (twice), 119-109 verdict in a bout that boasted little of the five-knockdown drama which saw him taken out in a daze back June.
The bout was threatened with delay by a rare desert rain-storm before it began but that was the storm before the big money fight exploded into a feisty nasty horror for Ruiz who came into the desert fight heavier than an Abram tank.
Tactical, describes Anthony’s approach. He was more composed and disciplined and for most part resisted the urge to join Ruiz in a brawl. He stayed on his rail and every punch he threw was meaningful, greeted by the 16,000 crowd in the purpose-built venue in the ancient Saudi capital with deafening claps.
It was a sweet revenge for his Madison Square Garden loss earlier in the year and after the match Joshua admitted that he will be pleased with a ‘’third one’’ as a potential decider.
‘’As you heard, we’re gonna do a third Joshua said in his post match interview.
Andy Ruiz didn’t back down either on the thought of a ‘’third one.’’
‘’I don’t want to give excuses. If we do the third I’ll be in the best shape of my life. I thought I was going to come on stronger but next fight I’ll be prepared and look at my team.’’
Promoter Eddie Hearn did not give away the next fight on the cards for his fighters but said the future plans are to celebrate and celebrate hard.
‘’Joshua has won Olympic gold for Great Britain and tonight in Saudi he became two time heavy weight champion of the world,’’ he said.
