COVID-19 Nigeria: Kano comes clean as Lagos and Oyo states lead with number of new cases, nationwide total now 7526

SUN, MAY 24 2020-theG&BJournal- Kano State reported no new case of the coronavirus (COVID-19) for the first time in weeks but stays second behind Lagos as state with the highest number of infections. It is not clear why Kano has no new case to report.

According the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) update for Saturday May 23, 2020, total number of cases in both Lagos and Kano are 3, 357 and 883 respectively. Oyo State reported 34 new cases, the second in ranking for number of new cases reported as at Saturday May 23, 2020. Edo State also reported one of its highest daily numbers of new cases with 28 more people counted as infected in the state.

7526 cases have been confirmed till date. 2174 cases have been discharged and 221 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory. 43,328 samples have so far been tested.

265 new cases are reported from 13 states- Lagos (133), Oyo (34), Edo (28), Ogun (23), FCT (22), Plateau (6), Kaduna (5), Borno (3), Niger (3), Kwara (2), Bauchi (2), Anambra (2), Enugu (2).

Meanwhile, 54 countries in Africa are affected. The continent reached a milestone Saturday with more than 104,279 confirmed cases, according to the Africa CDC. The virus has equally killed 3, 185 while 41, 717 have recovered.

South Africa now has recorded more confirmed cases than any other African country with 21, 343 positive cases.

Globally, COVID-19 has affected about 5.2 million with 1.6 million in the United States. Cases in Brazil are racing to eclipse that of the US now. The country registered 965 new cases Saturday and total confirmed case have reached 347, 398.
