MON 25 JAN, 2021-theGBJournal- The Federal government has released N40 billion for the payment of earned academic allowances for Nigerian university lecturers and earned allowances for non-academic staff, a significant step towards resolving the long standing dispute between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
The minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, said the FG has so far kept faith with the agreement between it and the ASUU as he revealed the payment today.
It is believed that the federal government may release the N30 billion revitalisation funds to universities by the end the of the month, also part of the bargain reached between the government and ASUU in their December 2020 gruelling meetings to find a common ground and re-open the Universities that have been shut for over 10 months.
ASSU said, ‘’of theN40 billion, about N10 billion was voted for the payment of earned allowances of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and technologists.’’
The federal government noted that members of NASU was paid N8 billion in 2019 when they threatened strike over the sharing formula by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
